A Foucault primer: discourse, power, and the subject.A. W. McHoul - 1993 - Dunedin, N.Z.: University of Otago Press. Edited by Wendy Grace.
"A consistently clear, comprehensive and accessible introduction which carefully sifts Foucault's work for both its strengths and weaknesses. McHoul and Grace show an intimate familiarity with Foucault's writings and a lively, but critical engagement with the relevance of his work. A model primer." -Tony Bennett, author of Outside Literature In such seminal works as Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish , and The History of Sexuality , the late philosopher Michel Foucault explored what our politics, our sexuality, our societal conventions, (...)

Ethnomethodology and the position of relativist discourse.A. W. Mchoul - 1981 - Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 11 (2):107–124.
The paper works through the topic of ‘theorising’ as it has been treated in ethnomethodology. It is concerned to show that the topic has a somewhat equivocal status within that discourse; that some recent self-critical moves in ethnomethodology which have been touched off by considering these problems constitute no more than further uncritical repetitions of that discourse; that ethnomethodology's critics have been concentrating unnecessarily upon its supposed ‘idealism’ and have missed a central trouble: that ethnomethodology is an overly realist form (...)

Semiotic Investigations: Towards an Effective Semiotics.A. W. McHoul - 1996 - U of Nebraska Press.
In Semiotic Investigations, Alec McHoul develops a theory of meaning that he calls "effective semiotics" - a theory that investigates "the ways in which signs have meaning by virtue of their actual uses." McHoul expounds his theory of effective semiotics - of "meaning-as-use" - in a series of provocative chapters on diverse topics. He begins by examining the relations between semiotics and history and between semiotics and specific communities. He elaborates on the nature of these relations by demonstrating the "effective (...)

    Remarks on Moore's Conception and Defence of Common Sense.A. W. McHoul - 1981 - Dialectica 35 (4):399-413.
SummaryThe paper is a critique of Moore's conception of common sense – a conception based on two central propositions. The critique is specific and textual in character but turns generally upon the difficulties inherent in Moore's attempt to articulate definite propositional grounds for common sense knowledge. By contrast, the discourse of the critique favours a praxiological conception of common sense and so proceeds to show how Moore's propositional conception itself emerges from certain textual and discursive techniques.RésuméCet article est une critique (...)
